Introduction

The idea behind "simple improvements" developed in my mind while teaching watercolors and oils throughout the last 20 years. One of the things I noticed during my classes was that in many cases the artist's painting didn't require a great deal of complicated and difficult dabblings to improve it. In fact a simple concept or technique, a small touch up, a little mark or a minor alteration could cause wonderful improvements and have a huge visual impact on the quality and integrity of the work.

"Tiny tips" is more about encouraging good habits and sharing helpful hints in managing your equipment and materials.  Tiny tips will also be about selecting good equipment and materials, looking after them and about improvising. This section will also teach you how to use new art related technology, paint and equipment so that you can expand and improve your painting skills.

Light Energy or Luminosity

Session 1 in Simple Improvements

Spruce Trees, Lake, Watercolor by Wendy Kroeker

This first session looks at light reflecting on water. Also known as shimmer. In this painting I masked the areas where I wanted shimmer. After the painting dried I rubbed off the masking fluid. I could be satisfied with the results that you are looking at here. But on closer observation and as I contemplate how this painting effects me I don't really feel a sense of light energy. It seems to be missing the brightness or the glow that reflected light has which causes us to squint in real life. What can I do to this painting to give it that glow?

You will notice with this next picture that I have created glow to the shimmer. It looks brighter than the one above that you almost feel like squinting! True light energy bounces off the water and spreads around edges making them soft and this is what we want to imitate in our work. The simple solution is to scrub out some of the masked areas with a stiff bristle brush or scrubber giving the hard edges that same softness thus the glow we are after. You may have noticed that I also scrubbed out between the trees to give the sun some glow.

Tiny Tips

Brushes, art bristle watercolor palette

If you have old bristle brushes you can cut them into different shapes and use them for scrubbers in watercolor. I use many different shapes for a variety of purposes. Look for used bristle brushes at garage sales or self help stores, or pick up discontinued brushes on sale at an art store.

Before I begin painting I pre-soak all my paints in my palette. This allows the dried paint to get soft making it easier to get rich color from the palette. Timing is very important in watercolor painting and the paper doesn't like to be kept waiting. It can cause a problem when your taking too much time trying to scrub and pull color from a dry palette.
